The Warning Signs Of Home Electrical Fires

August 8, 2012 Leave a comment

Many home electrical fires are caused by occupants who are unaware of or ignore warning signs of a potential failure of a home electrical system, fixture or appliance.  Here are a few of the warning signs to watch out for.

Warning Sign #1:  Frequently Tripped Breaker:  A typical home circuit breaker provides thermal protection and a tripped breaker usually indicates the circuit was overloaded/overheated and pushed beyond its maximum capacity.  However, it can also indicate an unwanted power loss such as an electrical short and arcing, such as in the case of an arc-fault breaker.  A breaker that has tripped once while using an appliance such as a vacuum is generally not a cause for concern, as the electrical system operated as intended.  However, you should consider using another circuit for that appliance in the future.  Breakers that frequently trip during normal use are a priority.  Shorts, arcing or constant overloading produce heat which can start a fire.

A typical home electrical circuit is designed to provide a certain level of power based on the location of the receptacle or fixture (what would typically be used) and has a maximum capability.  Most residential circuits are only equipped to output 15-20 amps, depending on capacity.  To put that in a bit of perspective the average hairdryer uses 8 amps, a vacuum cleaner uses 5 amps and a microwave uses 12 amps.  As you can see, it doesn’t take much to overload a circuit or cause it to heat up.

Warning Sign #2:  Damaged Wiring:  Many times, electrical wiring and cords become damaged over years of use.  However, the damage is not always visible on the outside.  Wiring can be damaged internally and result in shorts, arcing and fire.  Damage can result from pets, foot traffic, vacuuming and exposure to sunlight or weather.  Check all exposed cords and wiring on a regular basis and inspect for damage.  If damage or a short is found, discontinue use of that appliance or circuit immediately by unplugging the appliance or turning the circuit breaker off.

Warning Sign #3:  Switch or Light Does Not Work:  A light switch that does not operate, or operates sometimes can indicate a problem in the wiring, switch or fixture that can cause a fire.  This type of problem should be immediately investigated and the affected components repaired or replaced.

Warning Sign #4:  Electrical Smell:  Don’t ignore this one, as it is generally indicates a problem that requires immediate attention.  You may not see a bit of smoke, but may be able to smell it.  If you smell smoke in your home, get out and call 911.  Firefighters will respond and check your home.  They are trained and experienced in locating these problems and equipped with heat detection equipment that can detect heat inside walls or other hidden spaces.

If you identify a warning sign within your home’s electrical system, turn off the circuit breaker to that portion of the system and contact a qualified and experienced electrician.  Electricians have the capability to calculate proper circuit loads, test the wiring and locate any problems which may cause a fire.
